About Sonya Z.
Sonya Z. Phillips is a native of Virginia Beach, VA. She is a US Army Veteran that graduated from Old Dominion University with a BS in Biology and International Business. Sonya is a serial entrepreneur and wears many hats….one just happens to be made of rhinestones.
Her business journey began as the Fashion Designer and Sewing Instructor for Stretch Couture, a custom clothing company. She started her business as a self taught seamstress but has since studied under Marc Jacobs. Sonya has showcased her designs in many fashion shows including New York Fashion Week and around the world. She has been featured in magazines, calendars and videos as a Fashion Designer, Model and Actress. She is the founder of the Volo Fashion Show which takes place annually the Friday before Easter in Volo, Ghana.
Sonya currently teaches aspiring fashion designers how to start, market and finance their fashion brands. She offers Visual Arts Workshops with Tidewater Arts Outreach, and hosts sewing classes monthly.
Sonya was the Maximum Business Boot Camp $10,000 Pitch Competition Winner. With that investment she launched Sustainabili-T a lifestyle brand focused on sustainable fashion and self-love on April 4, 2022. This brand is working towards a manufactured line of sustainable items for plus size women and pets while also offering DIY sewing and wellness workshops.
Sonya spends most of her time serving her community. She was Ms. Plus Culture Galaxy 2021 (the very 1st “Plus” Culture Galaxy”). She is now the Assistant Pageant Director of Miss/Ms. Culture Galaxy Pageants. She is the Volunteer coordinator of the Young Investors Group, a Clean Water Captain with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Events Coordinator/ President for the Pembroke Manor Civic League, Media/Communications Coordinator with the Tidewater Coalition For The People and the Young Peoples Guild as well as the Advocacy Chair for the Zonta E-Club of the Atlantic Coast I.

When time permits, Sonya loves to travel, eat tasty things, learn new things, and shop for books that she will someday have time to read.
